The Journal of Steffanie Rivers: Generation Lazy

Steffanie Rivers

*A prerequisite for people to use products featuring artificial intelligence should include that person having the slightest bit of intelligence to begin with. Unfortunately it’s not safe to assume that just because someone was issued a driver’s license they are qualified to sit behind the wheel of a self-driving vehicle.

No one should have to remind a licensed driver to stay alert and watch for pedestrians and concrete barriers in the car’s path just in case the smart car makes a dumb move and heads straight for the people or the wall!

Even though we’ve longed for them since the Jetsons’ cartoon of the 60’s, self-driving cars only have been on the streets for a year or so. It’s not animation. They’re real cars with real consequences. Like real life. Anybody who is behind the wheel of a smart car has been driving long enough to know some degree of concentration is required, unless they want to become a real crash test dummy!

As society draws closer to AI some people will allow the technology to make them fat(ter), lazy(ier) and (more) dependent. And lets not forget poorer. Sure, Alexa and Siri come free with your smart phone today, but just like a drug dealer who offers free samples to get you hooked, it won’t always be free! Remember, Microsoft Office used to be included free on your laptops. Now you pay hundreds of dollars for it, because you’re convinced you can’t live without it.
