*Which is better… “Hamilton” or “Spamilton?” That is the question. The answer is BOTH! One show is Broadway’s best, and the other is hopefully bound for off Broadway. That is the hope for triple threat actor John Devereaux.
The two shows are time bending, history making, record breaking and filled with a diverse array of casting and talent.
As Lin Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” continues its national tour to packed houses and pre-sold, enormously priced tickets- save for a precious few who win deeply discounted tickets in a lottery; “Spamilton” on the other hand preps for the final curtain at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City, CA.
“Spamilton” is the brain child of Gerard Allesandrini, the king of Broadway parodies. Most notable is Forbidden Broadway, winner of a Drama Desk Award, an Obie Award and a Tony Honors for Excellence Award.
As the great White Way and its tributaries continue to be more inclusive, a wider net is cast for more and more talent to emerge.
One such shining star is John Devereaux, who was among six other phenomenally gifted performers who sing, dance and emote Allesandrini’s Spamilton in a manner that evokes riotous laughter and thunderous applause from the audience.
EURweb’s Jazzy Rita got a chance to speak with John Devereaux, who spoke about his journey to Spamilton.
When asked about any collusion with Hamilton, he told EURweb, the following.
John Devereaux: Spamilton creator Allessandrini originally intended to do like one song from Hamilton and spoof it, but then he went to Lin Manuel (Miranda) and asked him hey what’s going on here? Lin Manuel liked it so much that he said, ‘Hey go ahead. Do what you want to do. Take my show and flip it on it’s head.’ Lin Manuel actually saw Spamilton twice in New York. So we have Lin Manuel’s stamp of approval.
