Ryan Coogler Closes Deal to Write and Direct ‘Black Panther’ Sequel

*Ryan Coogler is expected to begin penning the follow-up for “Black Panther,” confirmed a person familiar with the project, saying that the plan is for Coogler to write the sequel next year with production kicking off in either late 2019 or early 2020.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the “Creed” and “Fruitvale Station” director has quietly closed a deal to write and direct the sequel.

As noted by usatoday.com, while the cast for the sequel has not been announced, Chadwick Boseman is expected to reprise his role as Black Panther/T’Challa, the king of the African nation Wakanda.

Boseman told USA TODAY in February: “There’s a hero here that I hope people grow to love. Not just because of physical strength, but because of his heart. That’s what makes a great leader.”

Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Letitia Wright (Shuri), Winston Duke (M’Baku) and Daniel Kaluuya (W’Kabi) are expected to return as well.

Back in March, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige gave some hints of the story process during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“One of the favorite pastimes at Marvel Studios is sitting around on a Part One talking and dreaming about what we would do in a Part Two. There have been plenty of those conversations as we were putting together the first ‘Black Panther,’ ” he said. “We have ideas and a pretty solid direction on where we want to head with the second one.”

“Black Panther” grossed $700 million domestically and more than $1.3 billion worldwide, and is also considered a contender for Oscar consideration.

Meanwhile, Coogler is reportedly developing the drama “Wrong Answer” with “Black Panther” star Michael B. Jordan. He also is executive producing LeBron James’ “Space Jam” sequel and the upcoming “Creed 2.”
