*NFL star Michael Bennett appeared in a Houston courtroom today (March 27) and posted bail on his felony charge of injury of the elderly.

As previously reported, Bennet has been indicted by a grand jury for allegedly injuring a paraplegic woman while trying to rush onto the field to celebrate with his brother during last year’s Super Bowl.

The woman suffered a sprained shoulder when Bennett allegedly pushed the back of her 800-pound, motorized wheelchair, according to the report.

According to The Blaze, “prosecutors alleged Bennet pushed through security personnel to reach the field, and that included the 66-year-old woman in a wheelchair. A stadium employee reportedly told Bennett to use a different entrance to the field. He also allegedly pushed another woman and ignored a request by a police officer to stop, the report stated.”

The felony charge for injuring the elderly carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

After the hearing today, Bennett’s lawyer, Rusty Hardin, spoke to reporters and gave this explanation of what the defense will argue: “He didn’t shove her that hard,’ or anything like that. … He never touched her.”

He’s also quoted by NJ.com as saying: “I’m going to say this with a smile and total confidence: they are going to change their mind. This guy didn’t do it.”

Hardin went on to say that “nearly everyone” who was there as a relative of a New England Patriot was trying to find their way onto the field, so it’s totally possible that someone else trying to get to the field shoved the employee, not Bennett, Deadspin reports.

Hardin added that he had witnesses, who prosecutors hadn’t talked to yet, who will say that Bennett didn’t shove the woman.

He was also left feeling some way about police chief Art Acevedo’s press conference, in which he called Bennett “morally corrupt,” “morally bankrupt,” and “pathetic.”

Hardin said: “We don’t talk about capital murder defendants like that.” And given that white male terrorists and school shooters are described by the media as “misunderstood loners,” he’s not wrong.
