*Kanye West has clarified the outlandish comments he made about slavery during a recent appearance on TMZ Live.

“When you hear about slavery for 400 years…for 400 years? That sounds like a choice,” he said in the interview on Tuesday (May 1). “Right now, we’re choosing to be enslaved.”

Cue the backlash. TMZ Live producer Van Lathan was able to speak for many irate viewers when he said West’s comment was made with “the absence of thought.”

“I’m appalled, and brother I am unbelievably hurt by the fact that you have morphed into something to me that isn’t real,” Lathan continued.

Following the remarks, Ye took to Twitter to defend the statement, citing disproven Harriet Tubman quotes in claiming that he is being exercising “free thought.” He said that he was using slavery as a metaphor for censorship, which he refuses to adhere to. “They cut out our tongues so we couldn’t communicate to each other. I will not allow my tongue to be cut,” he wrote.

“The reason why I brought up the 400 years point is because we can’t be mentally imprisoned for another 400 years. We need free thought now. Even the statement was an example of free thought. It was just an idea.”

Needless to say, #IfSlaveryWasAChoice is still trending this morning.
