Fans Mock Pharrell Williams for Excessive American Express Plugging During Concert

*American Express Platinum closed out Art Basel in Miami Beach with a concert finale featuring Platinum creative director Pharrell Williams.

The event was held at for Platinum House at the 1 Hotel South Beach on December 8 and Page Six reports that the singer delivered a high energy performance of his hit songs with NERDs Shay Haley. Many attendees, however, complained and mocked Williams for excessively thanking American Express throughput his performance.

“I think everyone was thinking the same thing,” said an attendee. “This is an amazing concert, but how many times is he contractually obligated to thank AmEx? By the end people were sort of laughing when he mentioned them, it was that much.”

“Do you think he’s going to make us sign up for a corporate card before we’re allowed to leave,” one guest cracked out loud near the end of the set.

The shameless plugs were so frequent, that whenever Pharrell went to speak into the microphone, “One group of tipsy fans would yell, ‘American Express!’” a source said.

The “Happy” singer may have noticed the reaction, explaining, “it’s not just some corporate fee or sponsorship. It’s a very real thing for us. I want you guys to know they’re real partners. I wouldn’t be doing this if it wasn’t real, if they didn’t really care about the arts.”

Amex partnered with Pharrell on his Yellow Ball — giving $1 million to a program to keep arts education in schools.

“We have to work on preservation of artistic culture,” Williams previously stated.

“I’m excited to be partnering with such a globally respected brand as American Express to inspire new innovative and creative premium experiences and work together to enhance the future of the Platinum Card,” said Williams in a press release.
