Baltimore NAACP Demands Firing of Additional Police Officer in Police Brutality Case

*Baltimore — The Baltimore City Branch of the NAACP is calling for the firing of one officer and prosecution of both officers involved in Saturday’s brutal police beating of a Baltimore resident.

The beating, caught on video, resulting in injuries to the victim included broken ribs, a broken jaw, swelling in the face, and an extended hospitalization. There were two officers on the scene involved in this incident. The most offending officer, Arthur Williams, was suspended and has since resigned. The second officer has been placed on administrative duties.

“We are calling for the firing of the second officer and prosecution of both. This act of police brutality involved a failure to serve and protect on the part of both officers and both should be held accountable,” said Sandra Almond Cooper, NAACP Baltimore City Branch President.

The NAACP Baltimore City Branch believes second officer did not act to stop the unprovoked act by Mr. Williams or intervene as the attack continued. The second officer clearly failed to faithfully discharge his duties and uphold the rights and respect of the victim according to the law.

President Cooper strongly encouraging Marilyn Mosby, Baltimore City State’s Attorney, to pursue criminal prosecution against Mr. Williams. Such prosecution is needed to continue to send a message to Baltimore City residents and police officers, alike, that obvious unlawful acts by a small number of Baltimore City Police officials will not be tolerated.
