EUR Exclusive: 2018 Film Independent Spirit Awards Red Carpet Coverage (WATCH!)

*Honoring artist-driven films for its creativity, originality, and most importantly its independence, the 2018 Film Independent Awards hosted on March 3rd, 2018 on the beach of Santa Monica, California was nothing short of talent both behind and in front of the camera being celebrated for its undeniable truth it brought to the big screen.

Now in its 33rd year, the non-profit arts organization that produces the Spirit Awards and the LA film festival handed out honors to films like Call Me by Your Name, Get Out, I, Tonya, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Big Sick, Ingrid Goes West and Lady Bird. The Spirit award nominations are cast by an anonymous hosting committee, then the winners are chosen by Film Independent’s 6200 members.

The ceremony aired live on IFC and Facebook Watch. For those who missed the live broadcast, video from the ceremony is now available on Film Independent’s YouTube channel.

This year’s major winners were Get Out, which won Best Feature and Best Director; Call Me by Your Name, which won Best Male Lead and Best Cinematography; I, Tonya, which won Best Supporting Female and Best Editing; Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which won Best Fe which won Best First Feature; The Big Smale Lead and Best Supporting Male; Lady Bird, which won Best Screenplay; Ingrid Goes West,ick, which won Best First Screenplay; Life and Nothing More, which won the John Cassavetes Award; Faces Places which won Best Documentary and A Fantastic Woman, which won Best International Film.

Taking home one of the biggest awards of the night, Jordan Peele who also won Best Director, was beyond ecstatic when his film Get Out was announced as the winner for Best Feature.

“I think it’s clear to everybody in this room and across the country and across the world that we are at the beginning of a renaissance right now where stories from the outsider, stories from the people in this room — the same stories that independent filmmakers have been telling for years — are being honored and recognized and celebrated,” Peele said, as he accepted the Best Feature award. “I’m so proud to be here with this group of people receiving this.”
