Today on News One Now: Sally Yates Gives it to the Republicans Straight

WASHINGTON, D.C.  — This morning on “News One Now,” host and managing editor Roland Martin spoke with former federal prosecutor Glenn Ivey about the dramatic testimony yesterday from former attorney general Sally Yates, who warned the White House that National Security Adviser Michael Flynn had lied about his ties to Russia.

In her testimony, Yates says she told lawmakers that she requested a meeting with the White House in January to make them aware of Flynn’s false conversations with the Russian Ambassador to the United States, and that the misinformation was being passed on to the press by vice president Mike Pence and others in the administration who were speaking on behalf of Flynn.

Martin also spoke with sisters Tyler and Taylor Durant and vice president of the Florida Education Association Federick Ingram about Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos’ upcoming commencement speech at the historically black Bethune-Cookman University.

DeVos has been criticized for her lack of knowledge regarding why HBCUs were created. Students and faculty members have signed petitions against her arrival, which some see as overshadowing the graduation itself. The Durants will be graduating tomorrow from Bethune-Cookman.

“Over the past week and a half it’s just turned into ‘The secretary’s coming, the secretary’s going to do this, the secretary’s going to say this’ – what will she says, how will we react. In the end we have forgotten this is a day where we’re celebrating the fact that we’ve matriculated over four years at this institution,” said Tyler.

Added Taylor, “They are attempting to push a political agenda and we are also selling the legacy for monetary gain. That is where we take issue with her being the speaker. It wouldn’t be so much of an issue with her coming had she previously stepped upon the campus and made herself known. When we’re departing to serve, I don’t want to depart to serve with a feeling of anxiety and that is what we’re going to be feeling when sitting in those chairs come graduation day.”

FEA Vice President Ingram noted that DeVos should work to have a relationship with HBCUs beyond speaking engagements. “This is not about Betsy DeVos having an opportunity to speak or her freedom of speech. A commencement speech is not a dialogue – it’s a monologue,” said Ingram. If she wants to have a dialogue she needs to come to the campus and have a town hall meeting, a forum, a plenary session – something that will have her sit and learn from these students and from the community at large.”
