*Rihanna’s debut on the A&E series “Bates Motel” is finally upon us.
The singer appears in tonight’s (March 20) episode as Marion Crane, the role made famous by Janet Leigh in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 film “Psycho.”
The casting, which was announced at Comic-Con, came about when executive producer Carlton Cuse read in Vanity Fair where Rihanna said she was a fan of the series. He gave her a call — and she agreed to pause her world tour for a week to film the two-episode arc.
She’ll also appear in next week’s hour, titled “Marion,” airing March 27.
Incorporating the classic character — whose shower scene is one of the most iconic in cinema history — was part of the producers’ plan from the beginning.
“It’s always been an idea to have ‘Bates Motel’ go through ‘Psycho’ in the last season like a tunnel, though it led to a different destination,” executive producer Kerry Ehrin tells Variety.

The producers have always said that the two projects take divergent paths — which means the Marion Crane of the film isn’t the same woman we meet in “Bates Motel.” That’s something that appealed to Rihanna. “We spent a long, long time talking about how Marion Crane for 2017 had to be a very different character than the one in the 1960 Hitchcock movie,” explains Cuse. Adds Ehrin, “It was important to try to bring that character into the contemporary world.”
The producers praise the singer’s work ethic on set, given the tight schedule of shooting 35 pages in a limited time frame. “We had this incredibly ambitious schedule where we were trying to shoot this huge amount of work for two episodes in the one week,” says Cuse. “She was so committed, she really worked hard, and she brought this open, vulnerable, completely in-the-moment quality to the character.”
“Bates Motel” airs Mondays at 10pm on A&E. See Rihanna in the episode’s promo below:
