As Residents Flee Pittsburgh’s Violent Northview Heights Housing Project, Refugees Move in

*Here’s a story that hits home for EURweb founder Lee Bailey.

It’s about the massive changes at a public housing project in Pittsburgh, PA called Northview Heights. Bailey grew up there in 60s before he left “the burgh” and joined the Air Force, became a radio disc jockey and founded RadioScope and this website. Things were a lot different back then. Violent crime was almost non-existent. You literally be out and about ’til the wee hours and felt safe. You could even leave your doors open or unlocked, he says.

Well, that was then. These days, just like any other big (or small) city, crime and gun violence is a huge problem in “The Heights.” What’s also different and ironic/interesting is that while local residents are getting out of dodge because of the violence, they are being replaced by refugees from war-torn African countries who find themselves in almost the same situations that THEY were fleeing from.

When Bill Gandy was growing up in Northview Heights in the 1970s and 80s, no one had to show identification to get in. But now there are armed guards and 200 security cameras dotted around this sprawling, isolated public housing project run by the Pittsburgh City Housing Authority.
