A Sucky ‘Bright’ Draws 11M U.S. Viewers, Netflix Orders a Sequel with Will Smith Attached

*Netflix’s big-budget Will Smith fantasy drama “Bright” has been crowned one of the worst movies of the year. But despite earning brutal reviews, a sequel has reportedly been ordered with Smith attached.

The company’s first blockbuster film garnered 11 million streaming viewers in the U.S. over its first three days, according to Nielsen figures reported by Variety.

“Bright’s” first three days drew an average minute crowd of 3.9 million viewers ages 18-34 and 7 million in 18-49. The gender split was 56% male, per Deadline.

As noted by engadget.com, “Netflix likely knew that its viewers would respond well to Bright well before its debut. That would explain why it was so quick to order a sequel.”

“Bright” centers on Smith’s Daryl Ward, a human cop, and Joel Edgerton’s Nick Jakoby, a rookie orc, working in the Los Angeles Police Department to fight crime. Along the way, they get caught up with a rebel elf who helps them protect a magic wand.

The movie leaves so many questions unanswered so many viewers (this writer included) think the follow-up should be a series not a sequel.

As reported by Deadline, Netflix acquired “Bright” in March 2016 after a two-week bidding battle, committing $90M for the entire package. That includes north of $3M for a script penned by Max Landis, making it one of the largest spec deals for a writer in years.

Meanwhile, Landis has been accused of sexual assault. No word yet if Netflix intends to pay him another $3 million for the “Bright” sequel.
