*By now the whole world knows about the capture of infamous Mexican drug lord, El Chapo.
However, according to ABC News, the Mexican government is conducting an investigation targeting Sean Penn and a Mexican actress for secretly meeting with and interviewing him for a Rolling Stone article.
The basis of the investigation is unclear — the interview was conducted in October in Mexico, when Chapo was still on the run.
It appears authorities knew Penn and actress Kate del Castillo — who facilitated the meeting and had gained Chapo’s trust — had hatched a plan to do a sit-down with Chapo.
Penn wrote in Rolling Stone he believed the DEA became aware he was going to travel to Mexico for the interview, adding …
“Booking any flight to Mexico now would surely raise red flags … I made a plan to hide myself in the trunk of a friend’s car and he drove me to a waiting rental vehicle.”
Meanwhile, it’s unclear if the U.S. government was aware of Penn’s plan or if they’re currently investigating.
As far as the interview is concerned, Penn asked Chapo about Donald Trump and his comments about Mexicans … and the drug lord called Trump “Mi amigo.”
According to TMZ, Penn’s 7-hour interview — conducted in October — was to the the capture of El Chapo. It appears authorities may have learned of Penn’s interview and used it to track down Chapo.
Penn wrote about El Chapo getting offers from Hollywood to do his life story, which appears to be the impetus for his decision to create a biopic. He actually got in touch with producers and actors, which was a key to his capture.
