Kerry Washington Talks Pressures Black Women Face

Kerry Washington*Kerry Washington is featured on the cover of Entertainment Weekly magazine and in it, she opens up about the pressure women face, most especially if you’re a black woman living in modern American society that is dictated by White Supremacy.

The “Scandal” star, dubbed “Beyond Beautiful,” is joined by fellow actresses Reese Witherspoon, Eva Longoria and Elizabeth Banks on the cover.

The ladies sit down for a candid roundtable discussion about everything from Hollywood’s sexism, societal pressures women face (in general), and being a boss b*tch. Kerry also touches on what it’s like growing up black in America, where black folks have to be TWICE as good to get HALF of what we deserve.

“It reminds me of this line that Shonda Rhimes wrote on our show that has really resonated with African-Americans,” Washington said. “It’s this idea you have to be twice as good to get half of what they have. It’s something that most black people I talk, when they heard that line, it completely resonated with how they were raised and the messaged their parents gave them. ‘That’s just the truth.’ I think it’s the same for women. You just know, you have to be twice as good. In a way, until girls don’t have that feeling, we will not have done our jobs. That’s almost the point: to not feel the pressure to be extraordinary.”

The YBF notes that Kerry also explains the importance of women supporting each other and celebrating girl power, but she looks forward to the day when women don’t have to go that extra mile to prove their worth.

“It will be so exciting when we don’t have to do this because we’re just equal players at the table,” she said

Kerry and her gladiators make their “Scandal” return on Thursday Feb. 11 at 9 p.m. on ABC.
