*NBC has set a timeslot for the Season 2 premiere of “The Carmichael Show,” its critically-acclaimed, yet ratings-challenged comedy starring comedian Jerrod Carmichael.
The show will premiere on Tuesday, March 10 at 10:30 p.m. before moving into its regular 9 p.m. Sunday timeslot on March 13.
With veterans Loretta Devine and David Alan Grier as his parents, Carmichael in Season 1 tackled such topics as gun control, protest marches and atheism through his distinctive comedic lens, and the comic says he was confident that NBC would take a chance on the show’s individuality with a second season.
“I think we put out content that was unique. I think that it was a void, and we tried to fill it. And so it was a good partnership,” Carmichael told the TCA earlier this month. “We thought it would lead to something else.”
“The Carmichael Show” will not let up on its exploration of hot button issues in Season 2, with gentrification among the first topics to be featured.
“Right now, we are working on a story where Muslim neighbors move into Joe and Cynthia’s neighborhood, because we feel like we have a lot to say on it.,” said executive producer Danielle Sanchez Witzel. “We would never pick something for shock value sake. We would only do it if it feels like we really have something to say, that these characters have something to say.”
