Not Much Has Changed with Hollywood’s Diversity (Watch)

darnellhunt

*Same ol’ Hollywood with no guts or better yet… heart!

Recently, UCLA’s Darnell Hunt released a report,  “Hollywood Diversity Report: Making Sense Of The Disconnect” and what does he know? That much has NOT changed in Hollywood.

Tinsel Town is still lacking in diversity both behind the scenes and in leading roles on TV and film.

“The report paints a picture of an industry that is woefully out of touch with an emerging America,” said Hunt, Director of the UCLA Ralph Bunche Center for African American Studies.

But America is becoming more diverse yet Hollywood doesn’t represent it. In fact, Hollywood isn’t representing the diversity in America’s marketplace.

Viewership is greater when there’s diversity in front of the camera and many times people of color behind the scenes make whatever diversity Hollywood does have happen. Just ask Shonda Rhimes with her hit shows, “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal”  — groundbreaking for both their storylines and diversity in front of the camera.

200 American movies made from 2011 and 1,000 TV, cable shows from the 2011 – 2012 season were studied. And the results were not great at all for women or people of color.

Though 2013 is considered a golden year for successful black films. It’s just one year. What has been prevalent for nearly a century is still dominant.

“The situation is better than it was in the 1950s, but Hollywood is falling further and further behind,” Hunt said.

But in a world where more independent films like “Dear White People” and “Fruitvale Station” are being made and creatives like Issa Rae are producing their own web series — sparking more opportunities for women and people of color in front and behind the camera.
