*A$AP Rocky is no stranger to the topic of gayness – gay rumors and gay controversy. Back in 2013 he was accused of being homophobic when his awkward on-stage behavior with openly gay basketball star Jason Collins at the MTV Video Awards made many folks feel some sort of way.
During the awards show, Rocky and Collins introduced Macklemore’s performance, but the rapper looked taken aback once the athlete started talking about accepting homosexuality. Click here to peep the video. The reaction caused viewers to joke about Rocky’s uncomfortable behavior, which inspired a string of online memes and videos, and criticism a-plenty. Rocky apologized:
“I’m mad that my facial expressions was like that because I’m not homophobic at all, and that whole thing just came off real homophobic,” A$AP Rocky told The Stashed of the incident.
“I didn’t really notice it until I got home and saw it. I apologize to Jason for that, because people was laughing and s**t, and you know… I really don’t think that’s funny.
During an interview that same year, he responded to rumors about his own sexuality:
“People say I’m gay sometimes, but I have a lot of bitches so why would I care? It doesn’t bother me at all. You know why they say that? Because they can’t say that I suck, they can’t say that I’m not handsome, and they can’t say that my lyrics are wack, so they say that I’m gay because they don’t have anything on me.”
Now the “Dope” star declares discrimination as “over” among the new generation. In an interview with BET, he blasts homophobia in the Hip Hop community as “silly.”
“None of that stuff matters. It’s silly,” he declares. “I accept people for who they are. Before, in hip hop, it was like you were gay by association. And that’s just petty. If you think about it…who cares? I don’t think it’s cool to discriminate against anybody for their color, their sexual preference or anything.”
Rocky makes his acting debut in “Dope” – a film that pretty much turns every stereotype about black youth on its head. It’s a great movie – and it opens this weekend, go check it out!
