*The highly anticipated prequel to AMC’s “The Walking Dead” premieres Sunday, and let’s just say that art imitates life, as African Americans continue to suffer in disproportionate numbers…at least in the first two episodes.

“Fear of the Walking Dead” follows life leading up to the zombie apocalypse that has already happened at the series premiere of “The Walking Dead.” The new show follows one Los Angeles family as they try to survive the onslaught of this mysterious virus that appears to kill people, then bring them (not quite) back to life.

“We’re experiencing the fall of Los Angeles, the largest city in the United States, through the eyes of this family,” co-executive producer and director Adam Davidson told the Television Critics Association earlier this month. “You’re really in the trenches with them and they’re part and parcel together. And I think that’s what makes it exciting, and that’s what also keeps it emotional and grounded. That said, it is a city of 14 million people, so there is going to be plenty of encounterings of the walker type or the infected type, as [co-executive producer] David [Alpert] says.”

In the first two episodes, the number of African American characters taken out by the virus prompted a TV critic to ask if producers were giving a wink to the ol’ horror movie tradition of black characters dying first.

Erickson said the disproportionate amount of black victims was not intentional. He swears the mass infection comes from an equal opportunity virus, and it will become quite apparent as the series unfolds:

“Fear the Walking Dead,” starring Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, Ruben Blades, Frank Dillane and “Orange is the New Black’s” Elizabeth Rodriguez, premieres Sunday at 9 p.m. on AMC.
