*Washington, DC – We all know that Selfies can be manufactured, self-impressions of how we want the world to see us. But what do they really say about who we are?
African Ancestry, Inc., the Black-owned technology company that pioneered genetics ancestry tracing for people of African descent, has created a student program to help educators get to the root of that question.
Titled The Ultimate Selfie … Connecting Identities to Excellence & Achievement (TUS), the customizable program is designed for grades 6-12 and College students.
“Studies have shown that young people with healthier identities are more likely to be successful in school and life and less likely to bully or be violent, among other things,” said African Ancestry co-founder Gina Paige. “The ultimate Selfie was created to enlighten on identity, educate on the importance of knowing who you are and inspire respect and pride among participants.”
Broward County School System, Florida Memorial College, Rutgers University and University of Maryland, Baltimore are a sampling of the schools that have already taken part in TUS. While each school is invited to customize their program based on their goals and activities, the core program includes:
- Student Learning Activity (developed by participating schools and encouraged to include STEM projects)
- African Ancestry Education Presentations
- Ancestry Testing and Reveal Events for students, families, educators and administrators
While AfricanAncestry.com has worked with youth since its inception in 2003, The Ultimate Selfie is an updated student initiative developed in conjunction with educators and psychologists to make for a formalized, impactful program offering. The Ultimate Selfie is also available for any organization with a focus on young people.
AfricanAncestry.com’s ‘The African Ancestry Experience,’ a one-day ancestral identity program for African American employee networks and other relevant groups, is also available during Black Heritage Month and throughout the year.
