*Disturbing videos showing two football players from San Antonio’s John Jay High School serving the ref a pounding during a recent Friday night game – which resulted in their suspension from school – is being investigated by police.

Assistant football coach Mack Breed has also been placed on paid leave as school officials investigate his involvement in the violent outburst, NBC News reports.

The two players were caught on video engaging in a sneak attack on the ref. One ran into the referee from behind, and the other player jumped on top of him while he was down. A video on YouTube of the incident had been viewed more than 7,000,000 times by Tuesday.

Breed is on paid leave while a separate investigation determines whether he may have provoked the two players. According to the NBC report, before the two players attacked the referee, two other players from the team had been ejected from the game, and Breed allegedly told his team: “That guy needs to pay for cheating us.”

The Marble Falls Police Department said in a statement that the referee was “targeted” and “blindsided” by the two athletes, who claim the referee directed racial slurs at John Jay players.

“The two players in question have been suspended from the team and school pending further investigation,” Stan Laing, executive director of athletics for the Northside Independent School District, said in an email to NBC News. No arrests have been made at this time. The two players have not been identified because they are minors.

“The video that we saw is extremely disturbing. It is not the good sportsmanlike behavior that we teach students. We are in touch with and cooperating with the UIL (University Interscholastic League) in the investigation,” said a statement from the school district. “Northside ISD will not tolerate this kind of behavior.”
