*So how will the hot tub be used for ill gotten gains this time?

In the first “Hot Tub Time Machine,” a Russian energy drink (Chernobly) is accidentally spilled on the controls of a hot tub being enjoyed by four friends, and suddenly the guys find themselves in 1986.

Craig Robinson was failed musician Nick, who seized upon the opportunity to re-play an open mic show that was an epic fail the first time around. This time, his version of Rick Springfield’s “Jessie’s Girl” and MC Hammer’s not-yet-released “Let’s Get It Started” moved the crowd.

When the friends finally Chernobly themselves back to the present day, all four – having known what the future held – are living much better lives than when they left. Nick is now a successful music producer married to a woman who is no longer cheating on him.

Cut to “Hot Tub Time Machine 2.” Steve Pink returns as director, and Robinson’s character – inspired by his MC Hammer performance – has become rich by recording songs before they were originally released, like Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” TLC’s “Waterfalls” and “Stay” by Lisa Loeb, who has a cameo in the film. Below, Robinson talks about Loeb’s reaction to the use of her song, and co-star Rob Corddry’s crush on the 90s singer.

“Hot Tub Time Machine 2” arrives in theaters today.
