*Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for “Weapons,” the highly anticipated horror-thriller from Zach Cregger, the filmmaker behind 2022’s “Barbarian.” The eerie new footage offers a tense look into the mysterious disappearance of a group of third graders, setting the tone for what promises to be one of 2025’s most unsettling cinematic experiences.
The trailer builds around a cryptic mystery: all but one child from the same elementary school class vanish without a trace in the dead of night. As panic grips the small town, questions about the children’s fate—and what might have drawn them away—start to tear the community apart. According to Warner Bros.’ viral promotional website styled as a fictional news outlet, Maybrook News, “At 2:17am, Wednesday morning, a group of 3rd graders from our school in Ms. Gandy’s class, who had recently transferred after an incident at her previous school, voluntarily left their homes.” The site adds that authorities remain stumped, with implications that something far more sinister is at play.
“Weapons” features a powerhouse cast that includes Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan. Beyond its spine-chilling premise, the film holds deeply personal significance for Cregger. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that “Weapons” was born from profound grief.

“I had a tragedy in my life that was really, really tough,” he said, per Newsweek. “Someone very, very, very close to me died suddenly and, honestly, I was so grief-stricken that I just started writing Weapons, not out of any ambition, but just as a way to reckon with my own emotions.”
Though he didn’t name the individual, many believe he was referencing the death of his longtime friend and “The Whitest Kids U’ Know” co-founder, Trevor Moore, in 2021.
“There’s certain chapters of this that are legitimately autobiographical that I feel like I lived,” Cregger shared. Cregger also cited Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia as a major influence: “It gave me permission when I was writing this to shoot for the stars and make it an epic. I wanted a horror epic, and so I tried to do that.”
While “Barbarian” was a breakout hit with its clever twists and minimalist setting, Cregger sees “Weapons” as something far more expansive.
“It is more ambitious in almost every way,” he explained. “The story is weirder and it’s twistier and it’s bigger. I have way more actors to fit into this thing. The set pieces are definitely bigger. It’s just a bigger, weirder movie than Barbarian is.”
Adding to the speculation and hype is a subplot mentioned in the viral marketing campaign involving an underground prison found in a rental property, an apparent nod to the twisted universe of “Barbarian,” suggesting a possible shared world.
“Weapons” hits theaters and IMAX nationwide on August 8, 2025. Watch the trailer above.
