*A far-right ethnonationalist organization, focused on creating a “whites-only” community in rural Arkansas, is now allegedly planning to expand into nearby Missouri.
The group, Return to the Land (RTTL), describes itself as a private membership association dedicated to individuals of European descent who embrace traditional values. Reports indicate that RTTL established its initial settlement in a secluded part of Arkansas’s Ozark region in October 2023. The organization is now exploring property near Springfield, Missouri, for a new community.
RTTL explicitly rejects multiculturalism, immigration, and what it calls “forced integration.” Its enclaves are designed to be exclusive, barring non-white individuals, LGBTQ+ people, and non-Christians. The group’s stated mission is to withdraw from what it views as a declining, diverse society, aiming to build self-sufficient, racially uniform communities grounded in rural, agricultural life.
“You want a white nation? Build a white town?” said RTTL co-founder Eric Orwoll in a video posted to X. “It can be done. We’re doing it.”
Orwoll defended the group’s exclusion of non-white, Jewish, LGBTQ+, and non-European applicants by asserting that their housing model operates entirely within the private domain and is therefore exempt from federal anti-discrimination laws.

Orwoll claimed that under certain conditions—such as owning a limited number of properties or living in a unit on-site—individual landlords are legally allowed to choose whom they rent to. He argued that RTTL is not offering public housing but instead functions as a private association where all landowners are members of a privately held LLC.
According to Orwoll, RTTL itself does not sell land. Instead, land ownership is managed through a private company formed exclusively by RTTL members. All residents, he said, are shareholders in this LLC, which he contends places the entire arrangement outside the jurisdiction of the Fair Housing Act.
He added that RTTL has retained multiple lawyers who specialize in real estate, discrimination, and securities law, and continues to seek ongoing legal advice to ensure the structure remains compliant with their interpretation of existing legal boundaries.
In short, Orwoll maintained that RTTL’s discriminatory membership practices are lawful because they occur within a private association and do not constitute public housing transactions.

The rhetoric and tactics employed by the group have drawn condemnation from civil rights watchdogs, who view the establishment of such communities as a dangerous escalation of white nationalist ideology in the U.S. While RTTL presents itself as a legally protected membership organization, its exclusionary practices have raised serious ethical and social concerns.
“I would like to have more communities so that people in all parts of the U.S. have this as an option if they want. I would also like us to network and branch out internationally,” Orwoll said.
Though local governments in both Arkansas and Missouri have limited legal grounds to interfere with private land sales or community associations, many residents have voiced discomfort over the idea of having a racially segregated group embedded in their region.
Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin responded to RTTL in a statement: “Racial discrimination has no place in Arkansas or anywhere in a free society. These allegations raise all sorts of legal issues, including constitutional concerns. My office is reviewing the matter.”
Whether or not the group succeeds in its expansion plans, its presence highlights a growing movement of extremist separatism cloaked in rural revivalism.
