*Tyra Banks is revisiting the complicated legacy of “America’s Next Top Model” in a new Netflix docuseries that promises an unfiltered look at the groundbreaking yet controversial reality series. The three-part documentary, titled “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model,” places the longtime host at the center of a conversation that has gained momentum in recent years.
As PEOPLE reports, the series explores what unfolded behind the scenes during the show’s 24-cycle run from 2003 to 2018, a period when the fashion competition became a pop culture staple. Through interviews with Banks, former judges, producers, and contestants, the documentary aims to present a comprehensive account of the environment in which contestants operated.
In the trailer, Banks reflects on moments that drew criticism, acknowledging that the intensity sometimes crossed a line. “I knew I went too far. It was very, very intense, but you guys were demanding it, so we kept pushing it, more and more and more,” she says.
The docuseries examines decisions and comments on contestants’ bodies, challenges that promoted unhealthy behaviors, and a widely criticized photo shoot involving blackface. Viewers can also expect to hear from familiar faces such as Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, Jay Manuel, and former contestants.
Banks previously addressed the show’s legacy while accepting the Luminary Spotlight honor at the ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Awards in February 2025. During her speech, she acknowledged mistakes made along the way, stating, “Did we get it right? Hell no. I said some dumb s–t,” while reaffirming her belief in the show’s broader cultural influence.
“Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model” debuts Feb. 16 on Netflix.
