*Okay, so confession time. I am not a true rap music aficionado. I do listen to and enjoy some artists and there are a few that I REALLY like.
Whether it is a good beat or a good message, I can be sucked in. I have even found myself being entertained by it at Open Mic night every now and then.
When I was approached to listen to and review rap artist Tre’ Yung, I decided to review it by committee: my two sons, my niece and I. I figured I would get the young people involved on this one, just to be fair.
There were four songs up for a listen: “Tap In,” “Sire,” “Coastin” and “Spotlight.” Although it was less than two minutes long, my older son and I liked “Tap In.” It had more of a discernable message than some of the other songs we listened to. It is about someone who achieved, despite being underestimated.
My younger son and I liked “Sire,” but only because of the slammin’ beat. I really could not tell you what the song was about. There was nothing special or remarkable about “Coastin” or “Spotlight.” We decided to venture over to Spotify to listen to more songs by him. There were two, “Nuisance” and “Where We Are,” that we REALLY liked. There were others, “Waistline” and “La-Di-Dah” for example, which my niece liked as well.

Tre’ Yung has a smooth laid back style. I was trying to decide who he reminded me of, but I think he is unique enough to stand on his own and not sound EXACTLY like anyone else and that is a good thing. I liked his flow and some of the songs, but there was nothing about his raps that grabbed me or sucked me in and nothing that made me want to put a song on repeat.
My sons, niece and I all agree the four songs we were tasked with listening to did not make us light up. The songs did not make Tre’ Yung stick out and make us search him out. He is far from being a bad rapper. Although we did find some gems in his work, he needs better material.
Tre’ Yung has a following, so obviously he has appeal. Check him out and decide for yourself. He may just be to bomb to you.
