*Maryland Public Television (MPT) has announced the upcoming documentary, “Becoming Thurgood: America’s Social Architect,” which is set to explore the remarkable life of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American U.S. Supreme Court Justice. The film traces Marshall’s journey from his Baltimore roots to his transformative role in shaping American civil rights law.
Directed and produced by Alexis Aggrey, the documentary features an unprecedented focus on Marshall’s voice, drawn from a rare eight-hour oral history, according to the press release.
“For the first time, audiences will hear Thurgood Marshall tell his own story — in his own words,” Aggrey said. The film, enriched by music from Grammy-winning composer Derrick Hodge, includes insights from family members, historians, and legal scholars, offering a fresh perspective on Marshall’s enduring influence.
Born in 1908 in Baltimore, Marshall’s path took him through Lincoln University and Howard University School of Law, both Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). As a lawyer for the NAACP, he argued 32 cases before the Supreme Court, winning 29, including the landmark Brown v. Board of Education in 1954, which dismantled school segregation. His 1967 appointment to the Supreme Court marked a historic milestone.

Executive producer Stanley Nelson, an Emmy and Oscar-nominated filmmaker, called it “an honor to work on this film about an American titan whose legacy continues to expand and endure in these turbulent times.” MPT’s Travis Mitchell echoed the sentiment, noting Marshall’s journey as “a story of almost unprecedented achievement.”
The documentary, a centerpiece of HBCU Week NOW 2025, will premiere on September 9, 2025, at 10:00 p.m. ET on PBS, PBS.org, and the PBS app. It will stream on platforms such as Roku, Apple TV, and Amazon Fire TV. Watch the preview above.
Produced by the Aggrey Company and presented by MPT, “Becoming Thurgood: America’s Social Architect” celebrates a legal giant whose work continues to resonate.
