*Netflix’s long-running sitcom “The Upshaws” is set to return for its seventh and final season on Thursday, January 15, 2026. The concluding installment will deliver 12 all-new episodes, leading to a highly anticipated series finale.
The show follows Bennie Upshaw (Mike Epps), a well-meaning mechanic and head of a Black working-class family in Indianapolis. Alongside his wife Regina (Kim Fields), two daughters (Khali Spraggins and Journey Christine), firstborn son Bernard (Jermelle Simon), and his teenage son from another relationship (Diamond Lyons), Bennie navigates family life while tolerating his sharp-tongued sister-in-law, Lucretia (Wanda Sykes). Together, the Upshaws confront life’s ups and downs with humor, love, and resilience.
Created and showrun by Regina Hicks and Wanda Sykes, “The Upshaws” first premiered on Netflix on May 12, 2021. The series quickly earned multiple renewals and became a fan favorite for its authentic portrayal of family dynamics and working-class life. Executive producers include Hicks, Sykes, Epps, Page Hurwitz, and Niles Kirchner.

Epps discussed the series’ conclusion on “The Breakfast Club,” revealing that creative differences influenced the decision to end the show. “The Upshaw’s ended because the writers, Wanda Sykes and the other lady, Regina Hicks, they just couldn’t see eye to eye,” he said, while acknowledging their talent: “They did such a great job writing. We had the best writing team.”
Epps added that disagreements largely revolved around the show’s direction. “I think the lady Regina, she had an agenda that she wanted to push with the show, and everybody didn’t agree with it all the time.”
The comedian also noted challenges posed by the cast aging over the years. “If you really want to think about it, the kids got grown. We really couldn’t go no further because of that. That’s what they do on these TV shows. When the kids get older, they cut the show off,” he said. He reassured fans that the final season restores the series’ energy: “In the middle of the seasons, we kinda lost it, but then in the end, when you see this season right here, you’ll see we end up getting it back.”
The seventh season promises to wrap up the Upshaws’ story with laughter, heartfelt moments, and the family’s signature resilience, giving fans a memorable farewell to the beloved Netflix comedy. Watch the teaser trailer above.
