*A San Antonio woman was killed by her pit bull last month after the animal turned on her in a violent attack, authorities said.
Simone Lyke, 32, was mauled on the balcony of her apartment on July 24. As the Daily Mail reports, police said she had been trying to move the male Bully dog outside when it suddenly lunged at her. At the time, Lyke had a friend visiting, which reportedly agitated the dog.
Witnesses described a horrific scene as Lyke screamed for help. One bystander attempted to distract the dog by throwing a pizza at it, but the brief diversion failed to stop the attack. According to police, Lyke tried to shield herself with her purse but was overpowered.
Emergency crews transported her to the hospital in critical condition. She died on July 28, her birthday, from complications related to the mauling, KSAT reported.
Footage captured during the incident showed the pit bull aggressively confronting police officers as they worked to subdue it. San Antonio Animal Care Services (ACS) took custody of the dog, where it remains in quarantine pending investigation.

Lyke and another person were listed as the animal’s owners. The second individual received criminal citations for the attack and for failing to provide vaccination or microchip records for a second dog.
Lyke’s mother, Suzzette Lyke, posted tributes online, claiming the dog belonged to her daughter’s boyfriend. “This is My Daughter Simone that was mauled but \[sic] her boyfriends dog… pray for my daughter,” she shared after the attack.
‘The love of my love is in Heaven with her family. Rest, my beautiful daughter, to be absent in the body, now you are present with the lord,’ Suzzette wrote after Lyke’s passing.
No arrests have been made in connection with the case. ACS stated they “will continue to work closely with other law enforcement as the investigation moves forward.”
