Stephen A. Smith Slammed After ABC Interview Goes Viral
*Incoming! Incoming! Stephen A. Smith and his mouth are under fire (again) after a recent ABC interview where he took shots at Joy Reid and Rep. Jasmine Crockett. His comments sparked fierce responses from journalists Tiffany Cross and Joy Reid, who accused him of using his platform to tear down Black women.
Cross said she was disappointed in Smith, calling him one of the “useful fools” media outlets use to speak on Black issues. She criticized his lack of humility and intellect, questioning why he’s been given such a powerful platform.
Joy Reid Accuses Smith of Betraying the Black Community
Joy Reid didn’t hold back either. She responded directly to Smith’s comments, accusing him of hypocrisy and of being a “sellout” who routinely disrespects Black women like Kamala Harris and Serena Williams.
Reid picked apart Smith’s public statements, highlighting inconsistencies and saying he often uses his influence to punch down on Black people, especially women, while praising conservative white figures.

Smith’s Controversial Takes on Kaepernick, Crockett, and Police
Critics have long pointed to Stephen A. Smith’s stance on Colin Kaepernick as problematic. From the start, he criticized the former NFL player for kneeling during the national anthem—an issue many now say he got wrong.
Smith recently attacked Rep. Jasmine Crockett for allegedly being disrespectful to the President. But online voices are accusing him of being selective, only calling out people of color while sparing white conservatives.
Selective Outrage: Praising the Right, Criticizing the Left
Smith’s praise of right-wing figures like Ben Shapiro and silence on controversial voices like Charlie Kirk and Donald Trump have sparked accusations of double standards. Critics say he reserves harsh criticism for the Black community while letting others off the hook.
This selective outrage has led many to label Smith a hypocrite. His critics argue that he uses his ESPN fame to elevate his status, often at the expense of his own community.
Jasmine Crockett Compares Smith to ‘Django’ Character
Rep. Jasmine Crockett didn’t mince words in her response. She compared Smith to the Samuel L. Jackson character from “Django Unchained,” who famously sold out other enslaved people.
She also called on Black men to stop attacking Black women in public, saying the constant criticism harms the community and creates further division.
Don Lemon and Tiffany Cross Add to the Criticism
Former CNN anchor Don Lemon also chimed in, accusing Stephen A. Smith of speaking on topics he knows little about. He suggested Smith may cozy up to white conservatives for financial gain.
Lemon and Cross both called Smith’s recent remarks embarrassing and harmful, saying they represent a deeper betrayal of Black voices and values in mainstream media.
Joy Reid Highlights Humanitarian Failures in Police Shooting Response
Reid also criticized Smith for how he discussed the police shooting of Renee Good. She argued that while he spoke legally about the officer’s rights, he failed to consider the deeper humanitarian impact of the case.
Reid dissected his statements line by line, showing how he’s often tougher on Black public figures than on white conservatives. She said this imbalance shows a clear bias and continues a harmful narrative.
The Legacy of Civil Rights and the Call for Better Representation
In the discussion, Reid and others brought up the legacy of Cleveland Sellers, a civil rights icon and father of commentator Bakari Sellers. Cleveland was a major figure in the movement and survived the 1968 Orangeburg Massacre.
His story was used to contrast today’s media voices with true freedom fighters of the past. Critics of Smith say his rhetoric dishonors that legacy by failing to stand up for Black lives in meaningful ways.
