*Snoop Dogg is making a major move into dramatic film territory, taking on a starring role in “God of the Rodeo,” a forthcoming prison drama helmed by writer-director Rosalind Ross. The project marks a significant chapter in Snoop’s expanding career as both an actor and filmmaker.
Joining him on the producing side are Death Row Pictures partner Sara Ramaker, Ridley Scott under his Scott Free Productions banner, and Giannina Scott through Cara Films, Deadline reports. Death Row Records has also been tapped to craft the film’s musical landscape.
“Linking up with Scott Free Productions and working with Ridley Scott and Giannina Scott on God of the Rodeo is life changing and an honor,” says Snoop. “Rosalind Ross brought a story with heart and grit, and that’s what I’m about. Me and the team at Death Row Pictures stepping in as producers, I’m acting in it, and Death Row Records is building the soundtrack — and this one got soul… We’re bringing an important story and something special to the screen.”

The screenplay is rooted in journalist Daniel Bergner’s extensively reported work on one of the most dangerous correctional facilities in the South. The narrative unfolds inside Louisiana’s Angola Prison in 1967, following Buckkey, a man serving a life sentence whose path crosses with an unlikely event — the institution’s inaugural inmate rodeo. What appears to offer a rare moment of dignity quickly exposes itself as something far more sinister, a brutal spectacle manufactured to thrill outside crowds and stroke the warden’s unchecked sense of power.
Giannina Scott spoke glowingly about Snoop’s addition to the cast, saying, “Ridley and I, with our companies Scott Free and Cara Films, are so excited and blessed to have Snoop join the cast, and for him, Sara and Death Row Pictures to partner with us to produce this important and soulful project from Rosalind Ross.”
Ramaker echoed that sentiment, noting, “God of the Rodeo is exactly the kind of collaboration we’re building towards at Death Row Pictures — bold, cinematic storytelling with real cultural weight.”
Ross addressed what Snoop’s presence brings to the screen, saying, “It’s a thrill and an honor as a filmmaker to bring the legendary swagger, soul and eccentricity of Snoop to this story in what will be a completely transformative role for him.”
Beyond this project, Death Row Pictures continues to build its slate under a multi-year deal with NBCUniversal, with a Snoop biopic moving forward at Universal Pictures.
Separately, Snoop is attached to star in and produce Eli Roth’s horror venture “Don’t Go in That House, Bi**h!” Roth called it the “ultimate haunted house movie” and told Variety the concept draws from “House, House by the Cemetery, Hausu, and Friday the 13th,” with ambitions to deliver “something so insane people can’t believe it exists.” Cameras are expected to roll this summer.
