*Sebastian Telfair, a former NBA guard once drafted 13th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in 2004, has been sentenced to six months in prison for violating the terms of his probation, according to Sportico.
The sentencing, delivered by U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni, follows Telfair’s 2019 conviction for defrauding the NBA Health and Welfare Benefit Plan of $358,000 through false claims. He was one of 18 former NBA players charged in a broader scheme that defrauded the league’s benefit plan of nearly $4 million.
As we reported earlier, from 2017 to 2020, the accused filed fraudulent medical and dental claims, securing reimbursements for nonexistent procedures, totaling roughly $3.9 million in false claims and netting them $2.5 million. According to 6ABC, the alleged ringleader was Terrence Williams, a 2009 draft pick by the Brooklyn Nets. Other players charged include Alan Anderson, Tony Allen, Desiree Allen, Shannon Brown, Will Bynum, Christopher Douglas-Roberts, Melvin Ely, Milton Palacio, Ruben Patterson, Eddie Robinson, Greg Smith, Charles Watson, Antoine Wright, Tony Wroten, Glen “Big Baby” Davis, and Darius Miles.
“The defendants’ playbook involved fraud and deception,” U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said previously in a news conference after FBI agents across the country arrested 15 ex-players and one of their wives in a three-year conspiracy that authorities say started in 2017.
Telfair was originally sentenced to 3.5 years of supervised release. However, his failure to meet key probation conditions—including completing community service, maintaining regular contact with his probation officer, and securing employment—led to the six-month prison sentence, which begins in August.
At a recent hearing, Telfair acknowledged missing appointments and admitted to struggling, saying, “a lot of things were stacked against me” and that he sometimes felt “stuck in the mud.”
He expressed remorse and mentioned efforts to improve his situation, such as participating in construction training. But Judge Caproni was unswayed, telling him, “You thumbed your nose at your probation officer and me over and over.”
According to Law360, she further criticized Telfair for failing to find work and making only minimal restitution payments, leaving a significant amount still unpaid.
