*Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of “The X-Files” has officially received a pilot order at Hulu.
Deadline reports that Coogler is writing and directing the pilot, which follows two accomplished but starkly different FBI agents who are reassigned to a division that had been closed for years — one dedicated to investigating phenomena that defy conventional explanation. Deadwyler is set to play one of the two lead agents.
Jennifer Yale of “The Copenhagen Test” has signed on as showrunner. Original series creator Chris Carter is executive producing alongside Coogler, Sev Ohanian, and Zinzi Coogler of Proximity Media. Carter first publicly acknowledged the project in 2023, revealing that Coogler planned to “remount The X Files with a diverse cast” and noting, “He’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory.”

Coogler has made clear he is fully committed to honoring the legacy of the original while pushing it forward. “We’re gonna try to make something really great and really be something for the real X-Files fans, and maybe find some new ones,” he said.
Speaking to Last Podcast on the Left, Coogler said of the series reboot, “I’ve been excited about that for a long time… some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f*cking scary.”
“The X-Files” debuted in 1993 and became a television phenomenon, blending paranormal mystery with science fiction and psychological suspense. It ran for nine seasons, and produced two feature films and a 2016 revival. Original stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have both been in conversation with Coogler about the new series, though Anderson has stopped short of confirming whether she will return as Dana Scully.
