*Public Enemy’s Chuck D and Flavor Flav stepped up to support the Altadena community after the L.A. wildfires, offering financial relief and a surprise performance.
The duo took the stage at the Black Music Action Coalition’s Restore and Rebuild event, performing their hit Fight the Power, TMZ reports. One highlight was their $2,500 donation to 10-year-old Grayson Roberts, a visually impaired boy whose drum kit was lost in the fire. His family received a total of $10,000 in aid. The rappers also visited the fire site, assisting Black families displaced by the Eaton Fire. Watch some highlights via the YouTube clip below.
Flavor Flav had previously spoken out about the lack of support for affected Black communities and partnered with GoFundMe and the Black Music Action Coalition to launch a fundraising campaign to provide immediate assistance.
“This is Flavor Flav in the building. It’s been inspiring to me, seeing a lot people coming together right now, lifting each other’s spirits,” he announced on Jan. 20 in a clip posted on Instagram.
“There’s not enough being done for the Black families and the communities. Come on, y’all. Let’s make L.A. strong, baby. Let’s help those in need,” the hip-hop star added.
We reported earlier that residents and supporters are turning to social media to share the devastating impact of the uncontrolled fire, which ravaged parts of Los Angeles County, including Pasadena and the Los Angeles National Forest. The multiple wildfires, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, have left many homeless and in desperate need of help.
The Black community in Altadena, Los Angeles County, for example, was devastated by the Eaton Fire, which scorched over 10,600 acres and claimed over 20 lives. To support those affected, a GoFundMe campaign titled “LA Fires: The Impacted Black Community Urgently Needs Help!” was launched in partnership with major African American law firms and local organizations, with 100% of funds going directly to those in need.
Flava noted the disparity between the help provided to members of the Black community and called for fellow artists and entertainers to join him in contributing to the GoFundMe campaign.
“I urge not only black artists and musicians and creators, but EVERYONE to come together and continue to help those in still in desperate need,” he said.
