Philadelphia Block Party Turns Tragic with Mass Shooting
*Just before 1 a.m. on July 7, 2025, a mass shooting rocked the Grays Ferry neighborhood in Philadelphia. The violence erupted on the 1500 block of South Etting Street during a large block party and memorial gathering.
Captured on Ring camera footage, the shooting left three young men dead and ten others injured. The youngest victim was just 15 years old. Officials estimate 40 to 300 people attended the event, 6abc Philadelphia is reporting.
Three Young Men Fatally Shot in Grays Ferry
Zahir Wylie, 23, was shot in the chest and died shortly after. Jason Reese, 19, was killed by a gunshot to the head. Azir Harris, 24, a father and anti-gun violence advocate, was shot multiple times in the back.
Harris had survived a 2018 shooting that left him paralyzed. He spent years speaking out against gun violence before losing his life in the same cycle he fought to end.
Ten Others Wounded in Mass Shooting Chaos
Among the wounded were two 17-year-old boys, a 15-year-old girl, and a 19-year-old man shot twice in the head. He remains in critical condition.
Other victims, mostly aged 18 to 24, are expected to recover. One person was injured while fleeing but was not hit by gunfire.
Over 139 Shots Fired with Automatic Weapons
Investigators say over 139 rounds were fired. Weapons used included a 9mm handgun, a .40 caliber, a .45 caliber, and a .10mm.
Some guns were illegally modified with “switches,” turning them fully automatic. This dangerous trend has raised alarms among law enforcement officials.
Ring Camera Video Shows Terrifying Attack
Ring footage shows multiple shooters firing into the crowd. Partygoers are seen running, ducking behind cars, and crawling to safety.
The viral video is now a key part of the police investigation. Philadelphia police released images of three suspects spotted in the footage.
Police Call Shooting ‘Cowardly,’ Search for Suspects
Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel slammed the shooters’ actions as “cowardly” and “wannabe thug stuff.” He noted that homes and cars were hit, putting entire families at risk.
One person was taken into custody with a firearm, but their role is still unclear. Police are urging anyone with tips to call 215-686-TIPS or submit online.
Community Left Shaken and Demands Change
The shooting disrupted the launch of the Young Chances Foundation’s summer camp nearby. Founder Tyrique Glasgow expressed sorrow and frustration, noting some victims were planning for new job opportunities.
Local resident Tiffany McDaniels described a heartbreaking scene, with victims bleeding on porches and sidewalks. The violence has left deep scars on the neighborhood.

July 4 Weekend Turns Bloody Across Philadelphia
The Grays Ferry shooting was the deadliest in a violent weekend. Between July 4 and 7, 46 people were shot in Philadelphia.
That includes eight victims at a South Philly nightclub on July 5 and three more shot in North Philly on July 6. Still, gun violence is reportedly down from 2024 levels.
Social Media, Surveillance Footage Driving the Investigation
Police are using Ring video and social media clips to track down the suspects. The footage has become a crucial piece of the timeline and suspect identification.
This incident highlights how AI-powered surveillance is helping document crimes and bring justice. But residents are asking—why does this keep happening?
City Leaders and Residents Demand Action
Mayor Cherelle Parker called for stronger gun control laws and better community outreach. The use of “switches” has made shootings more deadly than ever.
Locals are demanding answers, justice, and real protection from the constant threat of violence. As one mother said, “We just want to feel safe in our homes again.”
