*A recent Overton Insights poll indicates that in a hypothetical 2028 presidential election, former President Barack Obama would outpace President Donald Trump, securing 53% of the vote to Trump’s 47%, Newsweek reports.
The survey, conducted March 24-28 with 1,103 registered voters and a ±2.7% margin of error, imagines a repeal of the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms, stating: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” Such an amendment would require two-thirds approval in Congress and ratification by 38 states, a feat achieved only 27 times since 1787.
Trump, currently in his second term, has fueled speculation about a third. On Air Force One, he told reporters, per The AP, “I have had more people ask me to have a third term, which in a way is a fourth term because the other election, the 2020 election was totally rigged,” despite losing to Joe Biden. He added, “I don’t want to talk about a third term now because no matter how you look at it, we’ve got a long time to go.”
Trump has suggested unconventional paths, like running as Vice President JD Vance’s running mate in 2028. If elected, Vance could step down in 2029, paving the way for Trump to reclaim the presidency. The 12th Amendment, however, bars anyone “constitutionally ineligible” for the presidency from the vice-presidential role.
The poll highlights a public lean toward Obama in this imaginary contest, with a 6-point edge. Yet, the constitutional hurdles make such a change improbable without overwhelming bipartisan backing, a rarity in today’s polarized climate.
Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-NY), who led Trump’s first impeachment, warned, “This is yet another escalation in his clear effort to take over the government and dismantle our democracy,” urging Republicans to publicly oppose Trump’s third-term ambitions.
