*A new Netflix docuseries is set to unpack the gripping and controversial case surrounding the death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe and the trial of his former girlfriend, Karen Read.
Per Tudum, the three-part series, still in production with Sandpaper Films and co-directed by Danielle Johnson and Rob Miller, will explore the events leading to O’Keefe’s tragic death and the legal battle that captivated true-crime enthusiasts nationwide.
In the early hours of January 29, 2022, O’Keefe was discovered unresponsive in a snowbank outside a home in Canton, Massachusetts. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities charged Read with second-degree murder, manslaughter while driving under the influence, and leaving the scene of a fatal accident, alleging she deliberately struck O’Keefe with her Lexus SUV in a drunken rage after a night of drinking. Read’s defense team countered that she was framed, accusing law enforcement of orchestrating a cover-up to protect the true culprits.
The case took a dramatic turn during Read’s first trial in 2024, which ended in a mistrial on July 1 after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict. Norfolk County prosecutors pursued a second trial, which concluded on June 18, 2025, with a Massachusetts jury acquitting Read of second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter, and leaving the scene of a collision. However, the jury found her guilty of operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, resulting in a one-year probation sentence.

As the verdict was announced, Read spoke to supporters outside the courthouse. “I could not be standing here without these amazing supporters who have supported me and my team financially and more importantly emotionally for almost four years,” she said, USA Today reports.
The case’s twists and turns sparked widespread public fascination, fueling debates about justice, conspiracy, and accountability. One X user wrote, “don’t know if ppl outside the northeast were following this but some cops killed their friend then tried to pin it on his gf but kept sending each other texts like “hey don’t forget to drop that fake evidence later” and googling “how long for dead body to stop bleeding”. a+ work.”
Netflix’s untitled series aims to shed light on the complexities of the case, with filmmakers Johnson and Miller emphasizing their commitment to sensitivity.
“The team feels immensely privileged to be bringing this important series to a Netflix global audience,” they said. “It is a case that has garnered a huge amount of public attention and has far-reaching implications. We are also mindful that this is a hugely sensitive case and we are determined to treat all those involved with the respect and consideration they deserve.”
The docuseries promises to offer a nuanced exploration of a case that has left an indelible mark on the public consciousness, blending courtroom drama with questions about truth and justice.
