*Students at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School spent months hoping Michelle Obama would join their graduation celebration. Their efforts ended with a surprise message from the former first lady during commencement.
The video played during the ceremony at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in Baltimore. Obama did not attend in person. Her recorded remarks became one of the event’s standout moments, Bethesda Magazine reports
The campaign began on social media. Students used Instagram to encourage Obama to serve as their graduation speaker. The school’s Student Government Association shared videos, performances, and messages supporting the effort.

One football game chant gained significant attention, collecting more than 361,000 likes online. Students rallied behind the idea, and Obama responded directly to one of their heartfelt videos.
“I’m so moved by your videos — it’s a credit to what you and so many others in your generation can get done through the power of organizing,” Obama said in a comment responding to the campaign. “My team is in touch with your school and we’re working on something special. In the meantime, I want to hear more from you. What gives you hope?”
Student Government Association vice president Noah Grosberg introduced Obama’s message to the Class of 2026. He reflected on the response generated by the campaign. “I watched a community form around hope — real hope,” Grosberg said in his speech. “If this year taught me anything, it’s that the courage we find in one another gives me hope.”
The effort began during a Student Government Association meeting. Students discussed inviting Obama to deliver the commencement address. Grosberg said the idea stemmed in part from her documentary “Becoming” and its focus on the influence of young people.
“I’d watched her documentary ‘Becoming’ on Netflix and, you know, we grew up with her—her being a great speaker, her really emphasizing youth voices, and I just thought she’d be an amazing speaker and we’d be honored to have her at BCC,” he told NBC4 Washington.
In her remarks to the graduates, Obama said, “You all have so much to be proud of. We need your heart, your ideas, your optimism, more than ever. Participation in our democracy is the only way to build a community and a country that reflects who you are and what you believe.”
She also highlighted the value of personal connections. “The connections you make with others, especially those formed in moments of struggle, those make your life so much richer,” Obama said. “They make our communities and our country stronger, too.”
