*After a long absence from the spotlight, Maia Campbell has resurfaced with a renewed sense of purpose and an emotional message for her fans.
In a video shared on social media, the “In The House” and “Sister Sister” actress opened up about her journey and revealed a heartfelt professional goal. “Everybody keeps asking me, ‘what do I wanna do with my career?’” Campbell said in the clip. “And honestly, I can say that I really wanna get in touch with Tyler Perry and have him produce my mother [Bebe Moore Campbell]’s book, 72 Hour Hold. It was a monumental book for me… I’m still on that campaign.”
The New York Times bestseller unpacks the fictional story of a mother navigating her daughter’s bipolar diagnosis and the systemic gaps in mental health care, especially within the Black community.
Campbell’s mother clarified in a 2005 CBS News interview that the inspiration came from someone close, but not explicitly Maia.

“I have a mentally ill family member… I felt very stigmatized, very shut down, very ashamed,” Bebe Moore Campbell admitted. The late author was a mental health advocate and partnered with organizations like the National Alliance For The Medically Ill, per Vibe.
Maia, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1998, faced a series of public struggles over the years, including substance abuse and the loss of custody of her daughter. But now, fans are embracing her reemergence as she aims to uplift others through advocacy.
“Keep me up in prayer,” she asked followers. “Thank you for praying for me and I’m gonna do my best to make you guys happy.”
