Q: Rose is pushing Marvin to bring some of his old ways back. What does the old you want the new you to bring back?
AD: I recently realized. The old me, well before I was famous or had any fake famous or any statue of my name, was less susceptible to outside opinion. And I want that back. You know what I mean? Don’t get me wrong. I love humanity. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, and yet not all those opinions need to sway me and what I know to be the truth at my core. I’m getting back to that.
Q: How did you change your directing style between directing Ariana and Ke?
JE: As a first-time director, I was still learning the processes. They’re both Oscar winners, so it’s not like I could teach them anything. With Ariana, I was like let me see what you got. What are your ideas? Then she’d take ownership and give me so many options. Then I’d see if it works for the scene. Or the rest of the movie. I like a collaborative environment. I like to see what the actors will do with [the scene]. Then it’s a matter of me saying, ‘maybe we tone it down, we tone it up, those things. And with Key, it’s… And again, Key, Key was on from the very beginning, so we wrote a lot of stuff going for Key’s personality.
“Love Hurts” opens only in theaters on February 7.
