*Leonardo DiCaprio is questioning where movie theaters fit into the future of filmmaking as viewing habits continue to evolve.
In an interview with The Times of London, the actor shared doubts about whether audiences still prioritize the communal cinema experience over home viewing. DiCaprio raised concerns about the long-term role of theaters, as streaming platforms increasingly dominate how films are consumed. He asked whether “people still have the appetite” for the theater experience, wondering if movie houses could become niche destinations rather than cultural mainstays.
“It’s changing at a lightning speed,” he said. “We’re looking at a huge transition. First, documentaries disappeared from cinemas. Now, dramas only get finite time and people wait to see it on streamers. I don’t know.” His remarks reflect broader concerns among filmmakers about shrinking theatrical runs and shifting audience behavior.

Despite the uncertainty, DiCaprio emphasized the importance of preserving theatrical opportunities for future creators. “I just hope enough people who are real visionaries get opportunities to do unique things in the future that are seen in the cinema,” he said. “But that remains to be seen.” For the actor, the big screen remains a vital space for artistic ambition and storytelling scale.
DiCaprio has also voiced strong opinions about technology’s growing influence on filmmaking. In a separate conversation with Time, the Oscar winner criticized the idea of artificial intelligence being treated as art, arguing that it lacks a human foundation.
“It could be an enhancement tool for a young filmmaker to do something we’ve never seen before,” he said of AI. However, he drew a clear distinction between assistance and authorship, adding, “I think anything that is going to be authentically thought of as art has to come from the human being.”
He pointed to AI-generated music mashups as examples of fleeting novelty rather than lasting creativity. “There’s no anchoring to it. There’s no humanity to it, as brilliant as it is,” DiCaprio said, underscoring his belief that meaningful art requires a human voice behind it.
