*Kwame Kilpatrick, the former Detroit mayor whose political career ended in federal prison, is now facing the potential loss of his Novi, Michigan home.
According to CBS News, county records from Oakland show the property near Nine Mile Road and Back Road has crossed into foreclosure territory, with the unpaid tax balance surpassing $50,000. Court documents confirm the taxes went unpaid in both 2024 and 2025. State law in Michigan triggers foreclosure on properties where taxes remain unsettled by March 31 of the third consecutive delinquent year, putting Kilpatrick’s Novi property squarely in jeopardy.
Kilpatrick served as Detroit’s mayor from 2002 through 2008 before a sweeping federal case dismantled his political legacy. A jury convicted him on two dozen counts in 2013, determining that he had accepted bribes and manipulated city contracts. The conviction carried a 28-year prison sentence for wire fraud and tax evasion. After serving seven years, Kilpatrick was granted clemency by then-President Trump in 2021.
The property tax delinquency is not his only current legal entanglement. Earlier this year, Kilpatrick agreed to pay $823,649.09 in restitution to the City of Detroit, a figure that significantly exceeds the $155,000 he had previously claimed he owed. Kilpatrick’s legal troubles extend beyond the foreclosure and restitution disputes. In a separate matter, he has accused federal prosecutors of “bullying” in their ongoing efforts to collect money stemming from his 2013 conviction.
Authorities moved to seize $13,167 from a Comerica Bank account tied to Pathfinder Consulting LLC, which was listed under Kilpatrick’s name, according to CBS News. Kilpatrick filed a motion on April 1 objecting to the garnishment, asserting that the account belongs to his wife, LaTicia Kilpatrick, and that he has no ownership or management role in it.
In the filing, Kilpatrick alleged that prosecutors deliberately manipulated the court order to include his name. “The only reason that this account was frozen and made a part of the garnishment process is because the federal authorities doctored and deformed the court order to have movant’s name on it, Kwame Kilpatrick, and the Pathfinder Consulting Firm bank account number,” read the motion. “They knowingly misguided the court and Comerica Bank with their order for these funds. They intentionally misled the court by not putting LaTicia Kilpatrick on the order because they absolutely knew that it was not my account.”
For a man whose downfall was rooted in financial crimes against the city he once led, the mounting obligations paint a complicated picture. Whether Kilpatrick can resolve the tax delinquency before foreclosure is finalized remains to be seen.
