*What began as a celebrity roast has evolved into a larger conversation about race, comedy, accountability, and where the line should be drawn when Black entertainers become the target of jokes involving slavery, racism, and cultural trauma.
Now, more than a week after Netflix premiered “The Roast of Kevin Hart,” the fallout continues to generate heated reactions online.
During a recent commentary video published by Hype+, activist and social commentator Dr. Umar Johnson criticized both the roast and Hart’s participation in it, arguing that several jokes crossed the line from comedy into disrespect.

Dr. Umar Says Some Jokes Went Too Far
According to the Hype+ report, Umar took issue with multiple jokes delivered during the roast, including comments referencing slavery, racial stereotypes, and the death of George Floyd.
One moment that generated particular criticism involved a joke by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe that referenced Floyd’s death. Umar argued that jokes involving historic racial trauma and police violence should not be treated as ordinary roast material, regardless of the comedic setting.
He also criticized Hart for appearing to laugh along with some of the jokes, suggesting that financial success should not come at the expense of cultural dignity.
Speaking during an interview highlighted by Hype+, Umar accused Netflix of normalizing what he viewed as racially offensive humor and questioned why such material was included in a roast centered around one of the most successful Black comedians in America.
Plastic Cup Boyz Respond
The criticism did not go unanswered.
Members of Hart’s longtime comedy circle, the Plastic Cup Boyz, quickly pushed back against Umar’s comments on social media.
Comedian Spank Horton appeared to mock Umar’s criticism while referencing ongoing questions surrounding Umar’s long-discussed FDMG Academy project. Horton also challenged social media users who labeled Hart a “sellout,” asking critics to explain exactly what they meant by the accusation.
Meanwhile, fellow Plastic Cup Boy Dwayne Brown also referenced criticism surrounding Umar’s fundraising efforts, shifting attention away from the roast itself and toward Umar’s own controversies.
The exchanges quickly fueled additional debate online, with supporters of both Hart and Umar weighing in across social media platforms.

Comedy or Cultural Disrespect?
The controversy reflects a larger conversation that has existed for years within Black entertainment circles.
Some viewers argue that a comedy roast is one of the few spaces where no topic should be considered off limits. From that perspective, offensive jokes are part of the format, and participants understand what they are signing up for before stepping on stage.
Others believe certain subjects—including slavery, racial violence, and the killing of George Floyd—carry historical weight that should place them beyond the boundaries of entertainment.
For critics, the issue is not simply whether a joke is funny. It is whether some topics deserve greater sensitivity regardless of context.
The disagreement has once again exposed a divide between those who view comedy as a space for unrestricted expression and those who believe cultural responsibility should outweigh shock value.
Kevin Hart Remains Silent
As the debate continues, Hart himself has largely avoided addressing the criticism directly.
Instead, the comedian has focused on celebrating the success of the Netflix special. According to screenshots highlighted in the Hype+ report, Hart recently shared that the roast ranked among Netflix’s most-watched programs during the second week of May, drawing an estimated 13.5 million views.
Not everyone in the comments was impressed.
Some users argued that the controversy itself helped drive viewership, while others accused Hart of prioritizing entertainment and commercial success over cultural considerations.
Whether audiences view the roast as harmless comedy or an example of boundaries being crossed, one thing is clear: the conversation surrounding Kevin Hart’s Netflix special isn’t ending anytime soon.
