*Karmelo Anthony has been formally indicted for first-degree murder by a Collin County grand jury in connection with the stabbing death of fellow teenager Austin Metcalf.
The fatal incident occurred during a Frisco ISD track meet at Kuykendall Stadium on April 2. Anthony, now 18, was 17 at the time of the stabbing but is being tried as an adult under Texas law. Following his arrest that same day, he was released on a reduced bond and placed under house arrest on April 14. If convicted, Anthony faces a sentence ranging from five years to life in prison.
“We know this case has struck a deep nerve — here in Collin County and beyond. That’s understandable. When something like this happens at a school event, it shakes people to the core,” said Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis, per CBS. “But the justice system works best when it moves with steadiness and with principle.”
Willis also encouraged the community to keep the Metcalf family in their thoughts and prayers.

Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s father, welcomed the indictment but acknowledged the emotional toll, stating, “I fully believe that justice will be served for Austin Metcalf. I look forward to the forthcoming trial. But it will never bring my son back.”
Anthony’s attorney, Mike Howard, responded to the indictment via a video statement. “Karmelo and his family are confident in the justice system and the people of Collin County to be fair and impartial,” he said, adding, “We expect that when the full story is heard, the prosecution will not be able to rule out the reasonable doubt that Carmelo Anthony may have acted in self-defense.”
In June, Frisco ISD released surveillance footage of the stabbing. The video, recorded from a distance, showed movement under a tent near the 50-yard line, followed by chaos as people scattered. Authorities confirmed this was the moment Metcalf was stabbed.
Following the incident, Anthony was taken into custody. According to the arrest affidavit, he told the officer, “I’m not alleged, I did it,” and claimed Metcalf had put his hands on him after being told not to.
The case is entering the trial phase, but no court date has been scheduled.
