*Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation after nearly 10 years in office, stating that new Liberal Party leadership elections will take place on March 24.
In a news conference, he noted that he informed the Canadian governor general of his decision. Trudeau, who rose to power in 2015, faced multiple challenges during his tenure, including losing his majority in 2019 and being reduced to a minority government.
Per Deadline, Trudeau said, “despite the best efforts to work through it, parliament has been paralyzed for months after what has been the longest session of minority parliament in Canadian history.”
His leadership has been marred by declining public trust, ethics investigations, and political struggles, including facing the prospect of a new Donald Trump presidency.
“This country deserves real choice in the next election and it has become clear to me that if I have to fight internal battles I cannot be the best option in that election,” Trudeau told the press.
In November, Trump said if reelected, he would impose tariffs on all Mexican and Canadian products entering the United States.
“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” he said in a post on Truth Social.
Days after Trump’s post, Trudeau visited the president-elect at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. He later wrote in a post on X: “Thanks for dinner last night, President Trump. I look forward to the work we can do together, again.”
Speculation about Trudeau’s resignation had been growing, though many were surprised by its timing.
“Every bone in my body has always told me to fight because I care deeply about Canadians, I care deeply about this country and I will always be motivated by what is in the best interest of Canadians,” Trudeau said.
The controversial politician said he is “excited to see the process unfold in the months ahead” and that he will “always be motivated by what is in the best interest of Canadians.”
