*U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas officially launched her Senate campaign on December 8 in Dallas, aiming to unseat Republican Sen. John Cornyn in 2026.
Her Senate bid, however, has caused tension within the Democratic Party. According to Axios, several House Democrats are worried Crockett’s outspoken, anti-Trump image could alienate swing voters, potentially weakening Democratic performance in Texas, including in competitive House districts that may influence control of the lower chamber.
One senior House Democrat, speaking anonymously, said, “She might win a primary, but she ain’t winning a general in Texas.” Another added, “It’s concerning for [swing] districts … I think it’s a bad decision.”
Crockett responded in a statement, saying, “It’s hard to get a clear picture of who the Texans are from the fog of Washington.” She also stressed, “My message is one that reaches people who are often ignored by the political class. I’m not running a campaign focused on insider politics … I’m focused on reaching all 30 million Texans and earning their trust.”
Crockett entered the race shortly after former Rep. Colin Allred withdrew to pursue a House campaign, leaving her and state Rep. James Talarico as the leading Democratic contenders. Polling places Crockett ahead of Talarico, highlighting her strength among the party’s base.
While some Democrats remain skeptical about her general election prospects, others support her candidacy. Rep. Becca Balint (D-Vt.) said, “Crockett is an extremely talented messenger and has engaged millions of Americans across the country. She understands rough and tumble Texas politics and can more than hold her own.” Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) added, “I believe that she can win.”
