*India.Arie says years in the recording industry exposed her to the business’s darker side. The neo-soul singer recently took to Threads to criticize the industry’s power structure, writing, “Every artist has horror stories.”
Her posts arrived days after the death of Clive Davis, the longtime label titan whose influence shaped decades of popular music. “ANY DOMINATE [sic] RECORD LABEL, at which Clive Davis was at THE TOP, for 5 decades?, hurt LOTS of artists getting there,” she wrote, adding, “When people talk about the music industry being so awful. It’s the record label executives that do that.”
A follow-up post sharpened the point: “NO RECORD LABEL EXECUTIVE WHO IS DOMINANT IN THIS BUSINESS IS ETHICAL,” the four-time Grammy winner wrote.

According to The Hollywood Reporter and other outlets, Davis died Monday at his New York City home. He had spent time in the hospital weeks earlier while doctors treated an upper respiratory infection, but they later released him to continue recovering at home. Representatives did not immediately disclose a cause of death.
Over a career that spanned more than six decades, Davis became one of the recording industry’s most influential executives. He helped discover, guide and elevate artists whose music shaped multiple generations, including Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Alicia Keys, Patti LaBelle, Dionne Warwick and Jennifer Hudson.
Davis also left his mark across R&B, soul, pop, gospel and rock. His ability to identify and develop talent established him as one of the entertainment industry’s most successful music executives and talent scouts.
India.Arie told followers to “watch what kind of archival interviews are about to come out.”
