*‘This is Not A Transgender Issue.” It’s not only a headline, it’s the position the International Olympic Committee/IOC is taking toward Algerian boxer Imane Khelif. The hubbub is over Thursday’s bout at the Paris Olympics where Khelif secured a significant victory against Italy’s Angela Carini. The match, however, was overshadowed by controversy regarding Khelif’s gender identity, which has recently come under intense scrutiny.
Khelif’s triumph on Thursday came when Carini quit just 46 seconds into the fight, citing severe pain in her nose, and subsequently avoided shaking Khelif’s hand before collapsing in tears.
This victory marked a pivotal moment in Khelif’s career, who has always competed as a woman, including at the Tokyo Olympics. Despite her consistent participation in women’s boxing, Khelif’s eligibility was questioned after reports surfaced that she and another boxer, Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan, failed to meet gender eligibility tests at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi last year. Officials at the time alleged that the tests indicated the presence of male chromosomes, sparking widespread debate.
Angela Carini, reflecting on her decision to stop the fight, emphasized that she is not in a position to judge Khelif’s eligibility. “I am not here to judge or pass judgment,” Carini told reporters, expressing that the decision wasn’t hers to make, NBC News reported.

However, responses from other prominent figures were far less reserved. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni commented on the situation, suggesting that non-discrimination efforts might inadvertently discriminate against women. In a similar vein, former U.S. President Donald Trump vehemently opposed Khelif’s participation, declaring on his social media site, Truth Social, his commitment to keeping men out of women’s sports.
Renowned “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling, alongside billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, also voiced their criticisms. Rowling controversially referred to Khelif as “male” and described the match as a “brutal injustice.”
Musk, responding to a post about the fight, hinted at political dimensions, tying his remarks to Vice President Kamala Harris.
Despite the outcry, Khelif received significant support from various quarters. Ismaël Bennacer, a soccer player for the Algerian national team, defended Khelif, highlighting her undeniable talent and dedication.
“Full support for our champion Imane Khelif, who is suffering a wave of unjustified hatred,” he wrote on X.

Khelif herself celebrated her victory on social media, posting a photo from the match on Instagram with the caption “First Victory.” She did not address the controversy directly but has previously labeled her disqualification from the world championships as a “conspiracy.”
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) also stepped in, criticizing the backlash against Khelif and Lin Yu-ting. In a statement, the IOC described the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) decision to disqualify the athletes from last year’s Women’s World Boxing Championships as arbitrary and procedurally flawed. The IOC emphasized that such decisions should be made based on thorough and fair procedures, aligning with good governance principles.
Notably, the IOC had cut ties with the IBA last year, citing governance and financial transparency issues, and now relies on the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit for eligibility standards, which bases gender and age eligibility on athletes’ passports.
The Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee, celebrating Khelif’s win, did not comment on the criticisms but expressed pride in her accomplishments. Abderrahmane Hammad, Algeria’s minister of youth and sports, condemned the attacks on Khelif, describing them as cowardly attempts to tarnish her reputation.

As Khelif prepares for her next match against Hungary’s Luca Anna Hamori in the women’s 66-kilogram quarterfinals on Saturday, she carries not just the hopes of her supporters but also the weight of ongoing debates about gender eligibility in sports.
