*Ice Cube and Nia Long are returning to the comedy franchise that made them a fan-favorite pair, with “Are They Gone Yet?”.
According to Deadline, Skydance Sports has come aboard to back the project, which was penned by Chris Hazzard and Mike Fontana. This time around, Cube’s character, Nick Persons, is not dealing with a chaotic road trip. He is navigating grandkids.
“We built something special with this franchise. Audiences grew up with Nick Persons, and now Nick’s got grandkids. Time flies,” Ice Cube said. “Partnering with Skydance to bring this story to a new generation is exactly the kind of move CubeVision was built for, and I am excited for the new partnership.”

The first film landed in 2005 with Ice Cube playing a bachelor who got more than he bargained for shuttling his love interest’s two young children to their grandmother. Two years later the family was back, adjusting to suburban life while butting heads with a contractor portrayed by John C. McGinley. The pair of films pulled about $156 million globally and proved durable enough to spawn a TBS sitcom. That small-screen version, featuring Terry Crews and Essence Atkins, ran for three seasons before wrapping in 2013.
The new film is not the only project keeping Ice Cube busy. He is also in talks to reprise his role in “24 Jump Street,” Sony Pictures’ early-development continuation of the rebooted comedy franchise. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill are likewise in discussions to return, reuniting the core trio whose chemistry helped the series generate more than $500 million worldwide across two films. Rodney Rothman is attached to direct and co-write alongside Hill and Meghan Malloy.
