*HBO has released the trailer for “Seen & Heard: The History of Black Television,” a two-part documentary series exploring the impact of Black creators, writers, and performers on the television industry. Part one premieres Tuesday, September 9, at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT, with part two airing Wednesday, September 10, at the same time. Both installments will also be available to stream on HBO Max beginning September 9.
Directed and produced by Giselle Bailey and Phil Bertelsen, the project is executive produced by Issa Rae, Montrel McKay, John Maggio, Rachel Dretzin, John Ealer, Jonathan Berry, Dave Becky, Nancy Abraham, Lisa Heller, and Sara Rodriguez. Among those featured are Issa Rae, Shonda Rhimes, Tyler Perry, Lena Waithe, Oprah Winfrey, Tracee Ellis Ross, Ava DuVernay, Norman Lear, Swizz Beatz, Debbie Allen, Kenya Barris, and Malcolm Jamal Warner.
According to HBO, “Seen & Heard: The History of Black Television takes audiences on a two-part journey through the history of Black representation on television, showcasing how Black artists and creators both shaped and revolutionized the medium while confronting the systemic challenges that have often undermined their contributions.” The series combines archival footage with in-depth interviews to highlight generations of trailblazers who redefined Black storytelling on screen.
Per the news release, part one, titled “Seen,” traces decades of cultural shifts in television. From “Amos ‘n’ Andy” to “The Jeffersons” and “Good Times,” it examines how Black characters became more visible on screen but often lacked complexity or authenticity. Later, shows like “In Living Color” and “The Arsenio Hall Show” gave national platforms to hip-hop and Black comedians, cementing Black television as a force that could shape culture rather than simply reflect it.

Part two, “Heard”, explores ownership of narrative and the broader fight for representation behind the camera. Stories include Shonda Rhimes’ approach to color-blind casting, Oprah Winfrey’s independence as a media mogul, and Lena Waithe’s efforts to mentor emerging storytellers. The episode also reflects on the rise of social media as a tool for creators to control their own image, while highlighting how Black voices continue to push the industry forward by reclaiming authorship and shaping perception.
“Seen & Heard: The History of Black Television” is presented by HBO Documentary Films in association with Ark Media and HOORAE Media. The two-part series serves as both a celebration of the past and a look at the future of Black storytelling in television.
