*Imagine being praised for a movie you never starred in. Now imagine that happening constantly. That’s the reality for Halle Bailey, who has spent years politely explaining to strangers that no, she is not Halle Berry.
The 25-year-old singer and actress—best known for her role as Ariel in “The Little Mermaid” and one half of the Grammy-nominated duo Chloe x Halle—recently opened up about the persistent mix-up that has followed her for years. And while she has nothing but love for the Oscar-winning icon, she’s officially over it.
In a new interview with The Guardian for her new film, “You Me and Tuscany,” Bailey recounted the absurdity of being mistaken for Berry, who is 59 and has been a Hollywood heavyweight since before Bailey was born.
“The funny thing is that my parents were inspired by her name. They liked the name Hailey, but Hailey Bailey doesn’t quite work, so they went with Halle instead. I have met her – she’s been so kind to me every time. But people do often refer to me as Halle Berry, and I have to say: ‘It’s Bailey’.”

From Constant Confusion to Mutual Support
The mix-up reached peak chaos when Bailey was cast as Ariel in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid. Suddenly, the internet was flooded with excited fans—some of whom were tagging the wrong Halle.
Halle Berry, to her credit, handled it with grace and humor. When a fan tweeted excitement about seeing Berry “under da sea,” Berry playfully corrected them:
“Wrong Halle lol. I can’t wait to see her too though!”
Bailey noted that while the confusion can be “exhausting,” Berry has been nothing but supportive from the start.
The Moment They Finally Met
After years of digital back-and-forth—including Berry famously tweeting “Halles get it DONE” when Bailey was cast as Ariel—the two finally met in person at the 95th Academy Awards in March 2023.
The backstage meeting was everything Bailey had hoped for. Berry was encouraging, warm, and offered wisdom about navigating Hollywood’s pressures.
“Meeting her was a dream come true,” Bailey said later. “She’s an angel.”
Berry posted a photo of the two of them with the caption: “Halles get it DONE.” It was a full-circle moment for both women.

More Than Just a Name
Bailey has often referred to Berry as a “virtual mentor,” noting that Berry reached out privately during the filming of The Little Mermaid to offer encouragement during moments of doubt.
In her recent interview, Bailey reflected on the deeper significance of being named after such a trailblazer.
“It’s an honor,” she said. “I feel a spiritual connection to her. She paved the way for so many of us, and to carry that name—even if it gets confusing sometimes—means something to me.”
Bottom Line
Yes, people still call Halle Bailey by Halle Berry’s name. And yes, it still happens “all the time.” But now that the origin story is out, the confusion feels less like an annoyance and more like a tribute that came full circle.
Two Halles. One name. And a friendship that proves Hollywood doesn’t always have to be competitive.
Sometimes, it’s just supportive.
